A training manual contains instructions on how to improve a task or an action. It helps to ensure consistency for those assigned to a particular task. It can be a self-paced course or a reference book.
It could be on anything, such as: a reference for employees on sales techniques and how to incorporate those techniques in the business. Or it could be a guide for customers and/or employees on how to get the most effective use from a newly introduced product or service.
A training manual is important because it teaches the correct way to do or use something; therefore, it has to be well written and have clear tables and diagrams. These valuable documents initially teach a person about a particular subject matter and then the manual becomes a reference source when something unexpected turns up or a person forgets a particular element that occurs rarely.
Some training manuals have a life expectancy, especially when the subject matter alters to fit new developments or trends, but those expired manuals make room for the newer editions with relevant information.
Many manuals are poorly written to the point that you feel as though you are trying to decipher obscure ancient dialect.
